What "SL" Means in the Name
SUMC's tier naming describes exactly how a chain is machined. This is an SL (Super Light) chain — it has hollow pins and cut-out side plates, the lightest construction SUMC builds for this speed. Chains marked EL keep the cut-out side plates but use solid, non-hollow pins, making them a little heavier but more affordable. Chains with no such letters in the name at all use solid pins and solid side plates throughout — the sturdiest and most affordable option. As more material is machined away, weight drops and price rises, so you can choose the tier that matches how much you're willing to spend to save grams.
Why SUMC?
The SX12SL is SUMC's hollow-machined ultra-light tier: inner/outer plates and pin shafts are machined to a claimed 1-micron precision tolerance for less weight and cleaner sediment discharge, with pins hardened to 1600+ HV and finished with double-nitriding plus a titanium-nitride coating. Every pin is oil-sealed (patent ZL 2024 2 1214393.1) and rated for up to 10,000 km of riding. The Velocity Red finish carries a 4-micron anti-corrosion coating, salt-spray tested past 1000 hours, and is one of SUMC's range of finish colors.
